One of the most beautiful villages in France, Angles sur l’Anglin is in all the tourist information magazines and rightly so. Luckily for Poitou-Charentes and Vienne it is just in this region, but only just. It is literally about 3km from the next department of Indre. It is obviously on the river Anglin and this is my take on the classic picture that always is featured in any article on Angles sur l’Anglin. That water mill must have had hundreds of thousands of photos taken of it and this is mine
The entire village, which is actually quite a large village, is in fact very beautiful apart from the river and the water-mill and the ruins of the castle above. Just walking round there are so many photos to be taken or just places to sit and take five minutes to soak up the scene.
My day was made complete by the discovery of some Lizard orchids growing up in the castle area. Not something most people would get worked up about but they are incredibly rare in Britain, ( evidently not so uncommon in France) and they have the most extraordinary flowers. I must have looked a bit incongruous with my camera on a spot overlooking the river and the castle, facing away from all the scenic beauty, with my bottom in the air, clicking away at what to many people would have looked like a bunch of weeds. Stil,l I was happy and I did take a lot of other pictures around the village.
There is a good local web site, http://www.anglessuranglin.com/

Via Google maps just “visited” the south end of the Rue de Pont bridge over the L’Anglin…using street view it really brings the whole thing into context for me as I’ve never been…thanks so much for sharing this beautiful photo!!

It really does deserve the ‘one of the most beautiful villages in France’ tag. Not all of them come up to this standard.

The church in your photo has been shortened and is no longer a church. We’d never have noticed but one day last summer our visitors who know churches spotted the strangeness of the architecture. We went down to look and discovered that the church lost some off it’s front to allow for the now existing road to come through.
The church was empty, apart from a long ladder up to the rafters.
Angler s/Anglin is well worth a visit and is indeed an attractive village throughout.
