This restaurant is in the centre of Oiron, a village in the heart of the Thouarsais wine region. The exterior looks a little tired and unexciting and we hesitated about going in but are very glad that we did as this is in fact an excellent restaurant. Once inside we found that the restaurant was elegant and welcoming. Tapenade was produced whilst we considered the menu -always a good start – and once we had ordered the rolls which appeared were warm and crusty and obviously house made.
To start I had mozzarella and smoked salmon wrapped in filo pastry with salad which was delicious and Alan had a potato salad with an excellent smoked sausage. (It was much better than it sounds, it was really good…..Alan)
We both went for the poisson du jour as a main course which was a fillet of sole wrapped around a fish mousse accompanied by a round of very tasty finely chopped vegetables and a small crisp galette of potatoes. Ir was beautifully presented and tasted wonderful.
We both had the cheese plate to finish. The cheese was of the highest quality but given the quality of the cooking we may well have missed out on something special by not sampling one of their desserts!
Service was prompt and efficient, and the ambience was very pleasant – we noticed that they have a pretty terrace which would be a delightful place to eat in the summer.
At 17 euros the menu was not the cheapest but for the quality of the meal that was a very fair price – this is a restaurant with the “wow” factor!. We enjoyed a bottle of the locally produced wine with the meal which, with coffee brought the total bill to 54 euros.
