This was definitely the place to be on a cool and cloudy Friday in October! We went in for lunch because it was the only place which appeared to be busy at 12.15 – by 12.45 it was completely full inside and people were braving the terrace for their lunch. I would think it necessary to book to ensure getting a table here as we noticed that in the evening people were still spilling out on to the terrace – this seems to be a very popular venue indeed!
It is a no frills, lively, atmospheric bistro with a small but appetising menu. As we were intending to eat out in the evening as well we limited ourselves to a single course which for me was a fillet of cod and for Alan scallops both accompanied by braised mushrooms and salad. My cod was perfect – a well seasoned lightly crisped top and thick flaking fish below- and the mushrooms were tasty and plentiful. Alan pronounced his scallops probably the best he had ever had anywhere in terms of size, quantity and manner of cooking – posssible worth freezing on the terrace for!
It was not cheap – but nowhere on the Ile de Re is – so allowing for the Ile de Re premium the total bill which included a bottle of wine and coffee and which came to 60 euros was not too bad – and the food and ambience really were excellent.
