Haut Poitou wines are becoming more and more popular and recently we have found that they are rarely available at our local Intermarche so as we were visiting Poitiers we decided to visit Neuville-de-Poitou where the Cave is situated and you can make purchases direct.
From the outside the Cave is not that impressive but it is functional as you might expect given that it was set up in the early 1980’s. Inside it is well set out and the staff are very welcoming.
It is easy to find as it is well signposted as you drive into the town, but just in case you need help it is at 32 Rue Alphonse Plault 86170 Neuville-de-Poitou and the phone number is +33 5 49 51 21 65.
During July and August they put on conducted tours twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4 pm. They last one hour and cost 3 euros per adult.
The Cave has all the different Haut Poitou wines available and some excellent value wine boxes. It also has also other local produce on sale. It is well worth a visit as the wines are exceptionally good and despite a modest increase in price in recent years, no doubt as a result of gaining AOC status in 2011, they still are excellent value. You can find out more about the wines by visiting their website at Vins de Haut Poitou. This link is to the English translation of the original French site. I would also refer you to one of my earlier blogs about wines from Poitou-Charentes in general which has some interesting info about the history of Haut Poitou wines.
